Richard Ney is founder and managing partner in the firm of Ney, Adams & Sylvester. Richard began his legal career as a public defender in Illinois. He came to Wichita, Kansas, in 1984 to establish and head the first public defender´s office here. Richard served as chief public defender in Wichita until 1991, when he was appointed chief federal public defender for the District of Hawaii. He served in that position until 1996, when he returned to Wichita to open a private legal practice devoted to criminal defense.
Richard is currently one of 10 Federal Death Penalty Resource Counsel in the United States, trying and consulting on federal capital cases throughout the country. Richard has lectured to attorneys across the country on the topics of criminal law and ethics.
Acquittals Richard has won in the courtroom include State of Kansas v. William Buttersworth, 1988, (three counts of murder); State of Kansas v. Lisa Dunn, 1992, (two counts of murder); State of Kansas v. Earl Bell, 2002, (four counts of murder).
Richard graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a degree in journalism. He graduated from Boston University Law School in 1978.
Richard has been listed in Woodward/White´s The Best Lawyers in America in the area of criminal defense every year since 2001. Richard was named one of the top criminal defense lawyers in the states of Kansas and Missouri by Super Lawyers, a joint publication of Kansas City Magazine and Law & Politics.
Richard is married and his wife, Judy, is a Wichita public school teacher. They have six children.
